The Nutrition and Food Security Program, launched in 2019 under the Oral Health Advocacy Initiative (OHAI), has made significant strides in addressing the intersection of nutrition, oral health, and food security. This program is particularly focused on improving the nutritional status of vulnerable populations, recognizing that proper nutrition is essential for both oral health and overall well-being.
One of its notable achievements is providing targeted nutritional support to pregnant and lactating women, as well as children, particularly in Northern Nigeria. These efforts aim to combat malnutrition, which is prevalent in the region, and to ensure that these vulnerable groups have access to nutrient-rich foods that support both maternal health and the healthy development of children. By addressing the nutritional needs of these populations, the program not only enhances oral health outcomes but also contributes to broader health and developmental goals.
In addition, the program has played a critical role in offering nutritional support for malnourished children requiring cleft surgery across 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria. Recognizing that malnutrition poses a significant barrier to surgical readiness, the program ensures these children receive the necessary nutrition to recover their strength and prepare for life-changing cleft repair procedures. This initiative has directly improved the lives of thousands of children, enabling them to undergo surgery safely and improve their quality of life.
Through these efforts, the Nutrition and Food Security Program has demonstrated its commitment to reducing health disparities and improving outcomes for some of the most vulnerable populations in Nigeria. By integrating nutrition and oral health advocacy, the program continues to make a meaningful impact on food security and health equity across the nation.
